Driving a vehicle while texting is six times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated according to Verkehrsklub Österreich (VCÖ). According to the club, sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent — when traveling at 55 mph — of driving the length of an entire football field while blindfolded.

The Drivers Club further said that more than 100 people died since January this year on Austrian roads and highways. Almost 50%  of the accidents came as a result of sending SMS messages while operating a motor vehicle.

Lawmakers have been pushing for stricter punishments for driving while distracted.
